I liked how every once in a while this movie went for the absurd touch, like how Friedrich’s dad somehow turned into a pillow when he was in jail, or this exchange: “Ivy, I’m going to go join the war.” “Oh, cool, brother!” “Don’t tell our parents, though.” “That seems sensible.” The cinematography and editing were brisk and effective, but I also appreciated how when Ivy can’t go to the same school as Suzan, the camera lingers on her as we feel her pain. Judges’ Remarks: I loved this irreverent, screwball adaptation of Echo, which uses snarky narration and a breakneck pace to sprint us through this complicated multi-generational story! The performances were quite funny, from the narrator (“Where’s Gretel? I’m freaking out here, guys!”) to the ketchup-loving evil Nazi general, to the ludicrous rich old lady, to Ivy and Suzan and Ivy’s brother-this production did a great job of making do with just a few actors taking multiple roles! The costumes were resourceful, from the fake mustaches and birthmark to the hats and uniforms.
